The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia was formed on the 15th April 1948 in Sydney.
This was a direct result of the NSW government's increased involvement in firearm legislation.
The organisation’s primary roles were promoting the shooting sports and protecting the interests of firearms owners.
Those roles remain the same today, and with more than 150,000 members, the SSAA is the premier body representing and promoting the interests of licensed firearm owners across Australia.
AIMS and OBJECTIVES
• To promote and improve the role of the sporting shooter in Australia.
• To help educate young people in the skills of hunting, shooting and proper care and
safe handling of firearms.
• To encourage all hunters to abide by a strict code of ethics.
• To work for a better understanding between landholders and association members.
• To actively advocate game conservation and assist appropriate authorities in game management programs.
• To act as an effective and credible voice, representing all Australian shooters to the public, community leaders and authorities.
For a more in-depth look at the Association's history, see the February 1998 edition
of the Australian Shooters Journal.
